A few years ago, when I needed a lullaby for The Surrogate, I emailed Victoria James. She’s a fantastic songwriter and I hoped she’d have one among the many, many songs she’s written. (I often listen to her lovely voice and songs in my headphones as I write.) She said “no, but let me give it a shot.”  That sweet song For Always was the first of what Vicki calls “a collaboration of writing and song.”

A couple years ago, when Vicki sent me a rough demo of The Art of Love, which is the song that captures perfectly the confusion and dawning faith of Maggie in The Departed, she included another song on the CD.

“I don’t know why,” she said, “but I thought you’d like to hear this.”

That song was Be Still. At that point, I knew the story for The Hidden but had never discussed it with Vicki. She didn’t even know I had signed a new contract with WestBow, and that The Hidden was to be the first book. When I heard her sing, “when the sparrow falls, mercy’s wings will carry her home,” and “time alone and on the edge, there’s nothing safe about this rocky ledge,” I was simply astounded. (If you’ve read The Hidden, you know what I’m talking about!)  That God was in this blessing was clear.

Vicki’s latest CD, The Art of Love, features Be Still and the other seven songs that she’s written for my books. It also includes two other of her original works.  You can have a quick listen at:
